Dalepak Foods

Formed in 1976 by three local entrepreneurs, business grew rapidly and in 1980, the company became the very first manufacturer of frozen vegetable-based burger/grills. In 1998, Dalepak joined the Northern Foods Group, which led to considerable factory investment. This investment and growth in their manufacturing facilities, such as the introduction of flame grilled technology and new frozen food facilities, has continued in response to high demand for their products.

Goodlife Foods Ltd

The business started in North London in the early 1980's making food products, (which included some organic ingredients) for local shops and restaurants. Then, in 1989, the Kamlani family joined forces with the Shone family to form Goodlife Foods. The business started out in chilled food. However, the frozen sector developed at a faster pace, so in the late nineties, the company closed their chilled food business and turned all their efforts to frozen food production. Since concentrating on the frozen sector, the company has doubled in size.

Linda McCartney

Linda McCartney popularised a meat-free diet in Britain and abroad in the late eighties, publishing a guide to vegetarian cookery, 'Linda McCartney's Home Cooking' in 1989. The bestseller provided inspiration for her own range of ready-made vegetarian meals which she launched in 1991.

Linda McCartney's vegetarian food range has become so successful in the UK that the range now includes 28 different products and to date, over one billion of her meals have been consumed.

Quorn

In the 1960s, there were fears that the world would run out of animal protein. In response to this, scientists set out to find an alternative protein source. The discovery was made in the Buckinghamshire countryside, in a field near Marlow. The brand new protein was part of the fungi family (which includes mushrooms and truffles), and was called Mycoprotein after 'myco', the Greek for fungi.

The Marlow Foods Company was created to make use of this discovery and developed the Quorn brand which incorporated the new ingredient in its all its product range.

The Solae Company is a new company which was set up in 2003 as a joint project by two long established firms: DuPont and Bunge. Both these companies work in the agribusiness and food markets including biotech products and protein food ingredients. The centrepiece of the alliance was a new ingredients business based on soy protein which food manufacturers are now using in many of their meat-free products.
